GWiS Happy Hour at the Loft

February 13, 6:30 – 8 pm @ The Loft, 305 Stewart Ave 2nd floor

Join GWiS for a happy hour at The Loft in collegetown! Food and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are available for purchase, but unfortunately GWiS cannot cover the cost for food or drinks at this event. All are welcome!

Winter Science Supply Drive

We are holding a supply drive for the Free Science Workshop! The Free Science Workshop is a free-choice environment where youth can walk in and direct their own education. Donated supplies will be used by students during the Workshop’s open hours to explore and innovate. 

Accepted new materials: Nitrile gloves, paper towels, isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, sharpie markers, duct tape, rubber bands, glue, paper clips, gift cards to Home Depot, Lowes, or Michael’s, Electronic tinkering components  , LEDs (blinky RGB are the most popular), resistors, breadboards, switches, pushbuttons.

Accepted free and reused items: Unwanted lab equipment (contact FSW via email first to check suitability), corks, container tops, caps, and lids, small wheels, casters, bearings, and other moving parts, 1L and 2L plastic bottles, shelving or storage items, bins, tables, Wood scraps (free of nails and screws. Sheets and lumber), Hand and power tools, Clamps, vices, squares, sewing machines, Interesting old machines, Natural history items (rocks, fossils, bones)

GWiS & 500 Women Scientists Empowerment Month

Throughout March, join GWiS and 500 Women Scientists for a series of events designed to empower yourself, others and your community. 

Week 1 [Identifying Areas of Change]: Listen to our keynote speaker’s experience with finding their advocacy work.

Week 2 [Planning and Making Change]: Discuss with a panel of experts the steps they took to empower their community.

Week 3 [Communicating Your Ideas]: Attend a workshop designed to boost your skills in communication and start developing your project idea.

Week 4 [Executing Your Ideas]: Work with others to develop your project idea and leave with an action plan to take to your community.

These events are open to all interested, included graduate and professional students, postdocs and community members. Please contact gwiscornell@gmail.com with any questions or for accommodations.


Cornell Orchards Tour & Tasting

Cornell Orchards Store

Join us for an autumn-themed social event at the Cornell Orchards! There will be a short tour of Cornell Orchards followed by an apple, cheese and cider tasting! 
If you would like to carpool from campus sign up here. The Orchards are on campus but it’s a bit of walk!


Graduate Diversity & Inclusion 2019 Renaissance Ball: Starry Night

​The Annual Graduate Diversity and Inclusion Renaissance Ball is an effort of the graduate student organizations represented on the Graduate and Professional Student Diversity Council. This event brings together graduate and professional students for a night of live music, great food, dancing, and community. The Renaissance Ball celebrates the diversity of the Cornell graduate community and promotes inclusion of all of its members.

Have you been wanting to become more involved with GWiS? We are excited to announce that nominations for 2019-20 GWiS leadership positions are officially open! Nominations will close the evening of May 7th, and you can cast your votes digitally from May 8th through May 14th. A GWiS leadership position is a terrific platform to improve the scientific culture to help women and gender minorities thrive in STEM fields, as well as to connect with Cornell STEM women and the broader grad community. We’re adding a position called General Assembly Liaison for anyone who’s looking to try out a less formal eBoard position, and you can find descriptions of all positions hereIf you’d like to nominate yourself or a friend for please use our google formhereAll positions are a one-year commitment, and all nominees will be included in our official online election if they accept their nomination. The nomination period will close May 7th at midnight after our Spring General Assembly. 


Workshop Series: Scientific Illustrations
May 9th 4-7 PM @ Mann Library 100
Take a break from grading or studying to practice drawing in a low-key space! Join scientific illustrators Megan Bishop and Jessica French for a workshop where we’ll focus on visual observation skills and drawing fundamentals, including proportion and shading. Drawing supplies and refreshments provided. Since Bishop and Jessica will be working with us one-on-one, space is limited to the first 15 respondents! Register to attend the workshop here.

Happy hour 
Wednesday, February 20th, 6-8 PM, The Loft
Take a break from the new semester by relaxing with GWiS off campus! We’ll be hanging out from 6 PM onwards, but if you come early, you can make it in time for cheap drinks—non-alcoholic and alcoholic—during happy hour. Your eBoard’s eager to catch up and to talk about actions we can take to make GWiS more inclusive. We have some community-oriented and collaborative actions on the horizon, and we want to plan with you. Hope to see you there!

​Come learn to crochet with GWiS! No experience necessary. Learn the basics and enjoy free cider and donuts.


Happy Hour
Come catch up and relax with GWiS off campus! This is a casual social to enjoy drinks, n/a beverages and snacks. Please note that food and beverages will not be funded by GWiS. GWIS Pumpking Carving 
October 30th, 4-6pm, 416 Mitchell St.
Graduate Women in Science is hosting a pumpkin carving at the home of our president and vice president, at 416 Mitchell Street, from 4-6 pm on Sunday, October 30. Street parking is available on Elmwood. Please let us know if you’ll be attending, so that we can provide you with a pumpkin and carving tools if you need them! Also, let us know of any food allergies we should be aware of, and please be aware that two (very friendly) dogs live in the house.


Welcome Week Lawn Games Wednesday
August 31st from 4-6pm at the Big Red Barn
Come join us for our welcome week event at BRB to play badminton, croquet, and cornhole! The barn will be open for snacks and beer, and we will be providing ice cream.

Come celebrate the end of the semester with good food and great people. GWIS Ithaca is hosting a BBQ at Stewart park to celebrate the revival of our local chapter and welcome all our new members.
