I am a PhD student in Human Development and I study children’s social and moral relationships with non-human agents. I also study the influence of feminist and queer perspectives on scientific theories. I have a B.A. in Scientific and Philosophical Studies of the Mind from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. Outside of research, I enjoy reading, yoga, traveling, and doing improv with the Comedy FLOPs.

I’m a PhD student in the Department of Microbiology where I study symbiotic intestinal bacteria associated with herbivorous fish living in coral reef ecosystems. I’m originally from Minnesota and attended Hamline University in Saint Paul, MN where I completed a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in English Literature. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and baking, reading, hiking, and playing tennis.

I am a first year Master’s student studying Public Health with a concentration in Food Systems for Health and I am so excited for my first semester serving on GWiS eboard! My primary interests are community nutrition and food security. I also attended Cornell for undergrad, I graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences with a double major in French and Biology with a concentration in Human Nutrition. In my free time, I like spending time with my dog, playing clarinet, dancing, coloring, and relaxing.

Catherine Dadmun, Communications Chair

I am a third year graduate student in Food Science and Technology with concentrations in Food Chemistry and Enology; I just completed my MS and am starting my PhD in Fall 2020! My MS research explored the color chemistry of hybrid red winegrapes grown in the Finger Lakes. I’m passionate about making scientific research accessible to those it impacts, including consumers, farmers, and producers. I grew up in Tennessee and got my BS in Chemistry and BA in French and Francophone Studies at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. I love experimenting with new recipes, swing dancing, traveling, game night with my friends, and yoga.

Rikki Laser, Science Communications Chair

I’m a Ph.D. student in the Department of Psychology. I study behavioral and brain development in prairie voles, a species of monogamous rodent in which both parent voles take care of the young. I have a B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Other than research, I like to read, crochet, and embroidery. I am currently running Neurochet, a website dedicated to making neuroscience friendlier through art!

Kathleen Hefferon, Science On Tap Officer

Kathleen Hefferon is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology, and part of Cornell’s Active Learning Initiative. She has a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Toronto. Kathleen’s hobbies include the outdoors, horse riding and communicating about science.

I am a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering. I work on understanding what changes in the tendon microenvironment after injury that leads to degradation, and how I can manipulate these changes to promote repair. When I’m not in lab, I love trying new teas, playing video games, salsa dancing, and binge-watching tv shows.

Free Science Workshop 

Education Director (2016 – Present)    

I am a graduate student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I study the evolution and functional morphology of walking fishes, specifically Flatfishes, which have a unique way of walking while lying on one side. I co-direct the Free Science Workshop, providing underserved and low-income youth with a supportive community space to explore their world through science and making. I also love bringing the Physics Bus around the country, hanging out with my husband and two sons, and raising homing pigeons!
